Signal of the Flags
- Manteo Bay is located on the east side of Roanoke Island and wraps around the Shallowbag bay. Manteo Bay was incorporated in 1899 and is a waterfront community. During that time every store on the waterfront had two doors, one for those coming in by boat and the other for those coming from the courthouse or one of the inns.
- Manteo has more Bed and Breakfasts than any other Outer Banks town.
- History still brings people in to this area with history’s reminders of the 16th century ship Elizabeth II at Roanoke Island Festival Park, and the George Washington Creef Boathouse and Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse. Manteo hosts the nations oldest outdoor symphonic drama, The Lost Colony. This is done every summer.
- Instead of checking your weather channel for the local forecast, why not look outside and see the flags flying from a restored US Weather Bureau Tower. The days weather report is signaled from these flags.
- There is always a reason to visit this charming area, whether it’s for a concert or a show, or a nature program you will be glad you visited.
